Afrobeats songs of the moment

Since I’m pretty passionate about Afrobeats, and for me, Africa and music go hand in hand, every few weeks I will post the songs or song that I can’t get out of my head at that particular moment.

My favourite tracks right now are:

1. Sarkodie ft. Castro – Adonai

I don’t think I even need to state why this is my top played track this week. RIP Castro.

2. Fuse ODG ft. Sean Paul – Dangerous love

What a perfect summer song and it is just so catchy. Fuse ODG doesn’t fail to produce anything but great music. I’ve been dancing to this song for a few months now in preparation for a dance video I was working on with a dance group from Kibera called Platinum. Sadly due to the ankle injury, I’m no longer going to be able to take part in the #DangerousLove #AfrobeatsVSDancehall competition but it doesn’t stop me from loving this track. The official video is also awesome!

Here’s a very short clip from rehearsals with Platinum.

3. Mavins – Dorobucci Ft. Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D Prince, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Di’Ja

What a collaboration.  I absolutely love this song and literally play it on repeat. It’s also extremely danceable.

4. Elani – Kookoo

This is more of an old favourite from earlier on in the year but there was a time when I listened to this track non-stop for weeks on end. The video is also ridiculously cute. Elani are an up-and-coming Kenyan band. My Swahili isn’t quite good enough to understand all the lyrics but good enough to understand that their love songs are special. Elani are definitely an African band to watch out for.

5. Triple MG ft Iyanya – Mr Orio

Iyanya has done it again. This is definitely my favourite track from the new TripleMG album ‘The Evolution, it’s just so infectious and so singable.

Last time.

My favourite tracks this week are:

1. Weray Ent – Hammer

I absolutely adore this track. It’s so catchy, it’s infectious.  The video is also pretty entertaining. I’m going to pretend I don’t understand what the song is about as it’s quite cheeky.  This is most definitely my favourite Weray song to date. Nice one boys!

2. Atumpan – Clap Clap

He’s done it again. He’s cooked up ANOTHER banger. This tune will certainly get you “on your feet” and before you know it, you will be singing along.  It’s no wonder he won Best International Afrobeats Act at BEFFTA AWARDS 2013. Congratulations bro! For the record, I was meant to be in this video but I was volunteering at Glastonbury *sob* #itshouldvebeenme

3. Flavia ft. Skob – You Can’t Have Me

Listen up, there is new female talent on the UK Afrobeats scene: Miss Flavia, a new Ghanaian princess on the rise. Produced by Shawn T, this track mixes RnB and Afro-pop with synthesised beats – it’s a nice vibe and Flavia’s and Skob’s vocals really compliment each other. Watch this space!

4.  Fuse ODG – Million Pound Girl #BadderThanBad

I know I included Fuse ODG last week but I couldn’t not include this. Seriously, this is a track and a half. Upon first listen, I was instantly hooked. I can guarantee you won’t listen to this song just once, and if you do – let me know! #TINA

Before that.

My favourite songs of this week are:

1. Sarkodie ft. Fuse Odg – Down On One

If you haven’t heard this yet, you are in for a treat! It’s an amazing collaboration by two of Ghana’s top artists. I’ve had it on repeat ALL afternoon.

2. Bandana (Shatta Wale) – Dancehall King

I know this has been out for a while now but I can’t stop grooving to this song! Shatta waleee!

3. STARBOY Ft. L.A.X & Wizkid – Caro

Again, this isn’t brand new but I absolutely love this song. Yes, I have a soft spot for Wizkid- I seem to like everything he releases but it can’t be denied that this is a banging track. Cannot wait for the album to drop!
